NYU Writing Center Pledge
As a client at the Writing Center, I pledge to prepare for my appointment in the following ways:
- I need to schedule my appointment in advance of the due date for my paper so that I have ample time to revise after the session.
- Prior to my session, I will reread my assignment and draft in order to determine a particular question or concern to take up during the session.
- I will bring all materials to the session that the consultant and I may need: two accessible copies of my draft, the assignment, the course syllabus, previous writing, relevant research and reading, my professor’s comments, my laptop, etc.
I understand what to expect in my session:
- I will be prompted to think actively, to compose new writing, and to discuss my writing and revising processes, and to learn new techniques. I will be an active, collaborative participant in the dialogue about my work.
- My consultant or tutor won’t proofread or copyedit my draft. Instead, if I want to work on the sentence or paragraph level, my consultant or tutor will offer me choices and strategies that give me feedback on style, language, and conventions. Our conversation may also focus on how I can learn to assess and self-correct patterns of error.
- My consultant or tutor will work with me to create an open, respectful dialogue that is welcoming of different perspectives and experiences. This means that we may discuss aspects of language, history, and bias in ways that aim to cultivate a more inclusive understanding of issues of identity and difference.
I also agree to abide by the following Writing Center policies:
- I am allowed up to 6 appointments per semester. I will email the Writing Center if I reach my limit and would like to request 1-2 additional appointments.
- If I cannot make my scheduled appointment, I need to cancel it. Until 11:59 pm the night prior to my appointment, I can cancel it online at https://nyu.mywconline.com/. If I need to cancel the morning of my appointment, however, I must call the Writing Center at 212-998-8866.
- All of the University’s NYU Returns Covid-19 policies apply in the Writing Center, and I will observe those policies in full. As long as a masking policy remains in place in the Writing Center, I will abide by it.
- If I am not feeling well, I will cancel my in-person appointment and reschedule an online appointment. I understand that the Writing Center will not change in-person appointments to online ones.
- If I have signed up for an online appointment, I will find a quiet and private place to work so the consultant and I can communicate clearly. If I cannot be certain that I will have a quiet and private place for my online appointment, I will reschedule for an in-person appointment.
- If I am more than ten minutes late, I will lose my appointment to someone on the waitlist. If I miss two appointments without canceling them ahead of time, I will not be allowed to use the Writing Center again during the semester.
- If I work on a draft of an essay or an exercise for an EWP course, my consultant will send me a short description of what we worked on and accomplished during our session. My teacher will receive a copy of this message.
I have read the policies of the Writing Center and understand my responsibilities.
